What is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness, is a self-help practice, that helps people focus on the here and now (present moment). It uses techniques such a breathing exercises, gentle movement and focusing on the body and breath, to help create a calmer and more peaceful reaction within our being. It helps calm chaotic thoughts, that send us into overdrive, which can then lead to stress. The idea is to recognise these thoughts, and apply mindfulness techniques, before they have a chance to develop into anything more. It teaches us what to do, when we have these thoughts and how to work with them in a more positive, calmer and gentler way.
Mindfulness sessions that are offered through Orenda Scotland, are evidence-based, and consists of a blend between Mindfulness Base Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Mindfulness Bases Cognitive Therapy (MBCT). MBCT, is recommended by ‘NICE’ as a treatment of depression, anxiety and emotional trauma (Mindfulness Now, 2021). This allows us to offer the best from both mainstream programmes, giving participants the flexibility to adopt Mindfulness practices that align with their own circumstances.
What Mindfulness is not
It is important to highlight that Mindfulness, is not a therapy, it is a self-help approach towards self-development. You will be given the tools to put into practice, it is then a matter of applying those tools to your own circumstances. If you feel you would benefit from therapy sessions, Orenda Scotland can point you in the right direction towards appropriate services. It is not a religious practice, we do not refer to any religion, people from all religious backgrounds or non-religious backgrounds, can practice Mindfulness. We do not want to exclude anyone from the benefits of Mindfulness, therefore our teaching takes a non-religious approach.
What can Mindfulness help with?
Mindfulness, can help those who have a tendency to suffer from depression, anxiety, those who live with past trauma or have a strong tendency to worry about the future or dwell in the past. When combined with Mindfulness Bases Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), mindfulness can help people let go of unwanted and unhelpful thoughts and beliefs. Mindfulness, can also help with stress reduction, building self-confidence, pain reduction, and much more.
What happens during a Mindfulness session?
Sessions are one hour, and consists of; guided meditations, breathwork, visualisations and discussion. These discussions are centred around the meditations, mindfulness exercises, poems, and stories, which are selected in line with the focus for that week. Mindfulness exercises (such as using the breath) are set, and expected to be carried out during the week, to help you embed Mindfulness strategies into your daily life, which are then discussed the following week. Mindfulness sessions are in blocks of 4 weeks. We may from time to time, use meditation aids, such as meditation beads, pebbles, glitter jars or candles. These will be available to buy from our online shop or in person at the classes.
Is Mindfulness for everyone?
We do not wish to preclude anyone from learning / participating in mindfulness but, if you have, or have had any mental health condition, for your safety, you must consult your mental health provider or your GP before taking part.
